Over the many years of managing and organising sporting programs— as the song from Outkast, Ms Jackson, “You can plan a pretty picnic, But you can't predict the weather, Ms. Jackson“.

Every program coordinator, including myself, has faced climate challenges whilst on duty for the community. It does take a toll on us. But we keep going for them, the community. As sports organizers, we have to work for the best and prepare for the worst. Especially when people's lives are in our hands, their sincere objective with us is to have fun by playing recreational sports and building community. However, as program coordinators and as an organization as a whole, we must ensure calmness and clarity during stormy times to reassure the community and fellow communities. We are in this together; we will get through this and, in due time, daylight.

Climate change, an escalating global crisis, is increasingly making its presence felt in sports. From extreme weather events to shifting playing conditions, the implications of climate change on marks are far-reaching and multifaceted. As people in sports, from us as organizers to friends, athletes, fans and more, confront the challenges brought about by climate change, there is a pressing need to recognize the concerns at hand and adopt sustainable solutions to mitigate their impact.

One of the significant consequences of climate change is the surge in extreme weather events. Like in Malaysia; the Heatwaves, storms, and heavy rainfall have become more frequent and intense, disrupting sports schedules, wreaking havoc on infrastructure, and posing threats to participants of sports safety. Rising temperatures, a direct outcome of climate change, pose additional challenges, particularly for outdoor sports and endurance-based activities. Heatwaves heighten the risk of heat-related illnesses, impeding physical, mental, emotional health and diminishing comfort.

The impact of climate change extends beyond temperature fluctuations. Playing conditions, integral to sports, are transforming due to climate change. For example, shifting rainfall patterns affect sports played on grass fields or outdoor courts. Furthermore, rising sea levels significantly threaten coastal sports facilities, particularly those in low-lying areas. The increased risk of flooding and erosion can inflict damage upon stadiums, training grounds, and recreational areas, ultimately impeding access to these facilities.

For friends who loves nature through hikes and climbs outdoors. Biodiversity loss, is an ecological consequence of climate change, also permeates the world of sports. Ecosystems that support various sports activities, such as hiking, mountain biking, and more are at risk. In addition, the loss of natural habitats disrupts sports tourism. It compromises the overall experience of engaging with nature through sports.

The concerns arising from the impact of climate change on sports are numerous and varied. Safety risks loom large as extreme weather events and rising temperatures put athletes, staff, and spectators in harm's way. Heatstroke, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses become increasingly prevalent during outdoor events, necessitating rigorous safety protocols. Climate-related disruptions can cause event cancellations, rescheduling, or relocation, resulting in financial losses for organizers and disappointment for fans. The damage inflicted upon sports infrastructure by extreme weather events necessitates costly repairs or even the need for relocation. Moreover, unfavourable playing conditions or the unavailability of sports facilities due to climate impacts can dissuade individuals from participating in outdoor sports, contributing to decreased physical activity levels. Finally, the financial implications of climate change on sports must be addressed as operational costs, insurance premiums, and infrastructure investments surge, potentially straining the economic sustainability of sports organizations.

To tackle the climate crisis, sustainable solutions must be embraced by the sports community. Designing and operating sports facilities with sustainability in mind is paramount. Incorporating energy-efficient systems, employing renewable energy sources, implementing water conservation measures, and adopting comprehensive waste management strategies can significantly reduce the environmental impact of sports facilities. Equally crucial are developing and implementing climate adaptation strategies to safeguard athletes and spectators from extreme weather events. Heat management protocols, improved drainage systems, and resilient infrastructure play vital roles in ensuring the safety and continuation of sports events.

There must be collaborative efforts of sports organizations, governments, and environmental agencies are paramount in combating the climate crisis to protect people and the planet.
