The road to another chapter of one of Malaysia's most respected school rugby tournaments officially began as the Malay College Old Boys Association (MCOBA) hosted the launch and press conference for the 14th edition of the MCKK Premier 7s at The Penthouse, MCOBA, Kuala Lumpur.
Stepping into the venue, there was already a sense of tradition surrounding the occasion. The gathering brought together members of the media, alumni, partners and rugby figures, all sharing the same anticipation for what has become a staple in Malaysia's school rugby calendar.
The press conference featured addresses from MCOBA President, YM Tunku Dato' Ahmad Burhanuddin, Guest of Honour and President of Kuala Lumpur Rugby, YBhg Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Mohd Rafique, as well as Tournament Director Amirul Hazarin Hamidon, who shared updates ahead of this year's competition.

Returning for its 14th edition, the MCKK Premier 7s continues its tradition of providing a platform for young rugby talent to test themselves at the highest level of school competition. This year's tournament will welcome 24 teams—22 from across Malaysia alongside invited teams from Japan and Indonesia. Further reinforcing its reputation as one of the region's premier school rugby tournaments.
Beyond the competition itself, YM Tunku Dato’ Ahmad Burhanuddin mentions the wider impact the tournament continues to have on the local community. “From encouraging sports tourism in Kuala Kangsar to bringing together players, officials, alumni and supporters from around the country, the MCKK Premier 7s has grown into an event that extends well beyond the rugby field. Even lighter moments, such as the recommendation to enjoy Kuala Kangsar's durian season while visiting, reflected the organisers' desire to showcase the town alongside the tournament."
One message that stood out was the continued growth of Malaysian rugby at the grassroots level. Speakers spoke proudly about seeing more schools and communities raising their standards, creating a healthier and more competitive landscape where success is no longer concentrated among just a handful of teams. It was a reminder that the true victory lies not only in lifting trophies, but in seeing more young players and programmes continue to flourish.
The tournament will take place from 3 to 5 July 2026 at the historic grounds of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, with matches also available via livestream on the tournament's official Facebook and YouTube channels for supporters unable to make the trip.
As always, while champions will eventually be crowned, tournaments like the MCKK Premier 7s continue to demonstrate why school sports remain such an important part of Malaysia's sporting ecosystem—creating opportunities for young athletes to compete, learn and inspire the next generation.
