From the distance you see the floodlights. Mesmerised, you’re drawn towards the stadium. One foot after another with eyes peeled towards the lights ahead of you.
As you walk you’re aware that there are two, then ten, then hundreds alongside you. Treading the same path towards “Our Mecca”.
You hear the scarf and programme sellers, and smell the atmosphere. There’s more urgency in your steps and the excited chatter and chanting invades the senses.
There’s a bit of tension in the air as the turnstiles click. You’re in. You ascend the stairs amidst the throng. And then you look up and see the floodlights again. Ten more paces, and you look down and see the green – the glorious green – while the noise explodes around you.
Senses can’t take it in. But this is Your tribe. You belong.
You’ve not even seen a player and yet you’re already entwined in the most fabulous, unpredictable, wonderful, horrible, emotion-shredding, torrid love affair you’ll ever have.
You’re in love with football.
Forever.
