Pack more of your meatballs and get yourself the Hamo reclining chair, because Sweden are going through to the knockout stages of the World Cup!

In what was a shock 3-0 defeat to strong table-toppers Mexico, Sweden came in all-guns blazing, while the Mexicans forgot to reload their barrels. If it wasn’t for Germany’s loss to South Korea, the Mexicans would have suffered the cruel fate of the World Cup group stages and gone home.

From the get-go, the Mexicans did not look convincing enough in attack, with Carlos Vela, their ever-present striker, forgetting his shooting boots, missing 3 shots in the first half and denying his team a consolation goal in the final minutes of the game. Hirving Lozano, Mexico’s new talisman, was also nowhere to be found on the pitch, which increases more means for anxiety in the Los Blancos half.

Sweden, on the other hand, did what a typical European team would do, make use of the experience in each position and go into game with an eerie sense of confidence, one they showed during their narrow defeat to Germany. Granqvist, Larsson and Toivonen showed their worth to the Swedes, along with new prospects like Emil Forsberg and Augustinsson, who earned himself a goal in this game.

The remaining two goals from Sweden, a penalty converted by Granqvist, and an own goal by Edison Alvarez saw Mexico hanging onto their Round of 16 berth by a thread. It was an overall poor performance in a game which many would have touted a close to similar scoreline, only the other way round. Whether or not they saw how close they were to an exit was entirely down to the fans, who were of course tuning into the Germany-Korea game.

The win saw Sweden leapfrog Mexico and Germany to the 2nd spot, and giving them a better shot at the next stage of the competition, while Mexico will have to face a mountain of a task in the form of Brazil.

They’ll be hoping that an abuela somewhere is praying for them in front of the TV screen during the national anthem close-ups, come that day.
